We know how a picture frame matters for a photo. It makes the photo look more interesting and attractive than one without a border. Similarly, we can also add a frame to video especially when we want to create a funny video. When we post it to social platforms like Instagram and Facebook, it will catch much more attention. Does anyone know how to set the poster frame in iMovie? It seems to default to a frame in the middle of the video. When saving or sharing the file, you can hover over a frame within your videos to set the poster frame, but once the file is saved, it goes back to the default.
This tutorial is for anyone who wants to learn how to use iMovie’s overlays to produce the amazing picture in picture (or PIP) effect.
It is easy to do, so let’s jump in!
Quick Navigation:1. A Better Way to Create PIP Effect: Movavi Video Editor
iMovie being a free video editor is really good at doing basic video editing, however, there are still a few limitations and drawbacks. It isn’t available for use on the Windows platform since it was made specifically for Mac.
On the contrary, the basic editing features included in the software give you great control over your project’s video and audio that you can use to create impressive videos.
For those purposes, Movavi Video Editor is thought to be a great alternative to iMovie. This all-inclusive video editing program helps to produce videos and slideshows on your home PC with a professional look, even if you are a newbie.
Add audio, make text captions, include visual effects and transitions or any other feature you find useful for your video.
Be sure you have Movavi installed (see steps below) and we’ll show you have to place one video inside another:
Step1. Upload Your Media Files
Open Movavi and in full-feature mode select Create a project in the window that pops up.
Next, Add Media Files and upload the background and foreground videos/pictures for your project. At the bottom of the window, you will see the files on the Timeline.
Step2. Apply Picture-in-picture Effect
Pick the video you want to overlay on the background clip and place it on the Overlay Track by dragging and dropping it.
The foreground video will cover one-quarter of the background video in the preview screen.
Double click the foreground video on the Overlay Track to begin editing. You can change the location of the video in the preview screen. Use the Angle parameter to rotate it or change the size by pulling on the edges.
You have the option to place the overlay video anywhere you choose on the background video. From the drop-down list over the preview screen, pick one of these choices: Side by Side, Picture in picture or Cover.
Step3. Animate the Foreground Video Clip (Optional)
Include animation effect on the foreground clips if you choose to.
On the Overlay track, right click on the video then go to Tools > Animation.
Select the Add Animation button in the window that pops up.
Then drag the foreground video (in the preview window) to the spot you want.
On the timeline, use the keyframe points to establish the animation length and time.
You are all done!
2. Creating PIP with iMovie on Mac
Begin by launching iMovie and importing both video clips to the media library. Next, on the timeline insert the background video.
Step1. Choose the video for the foreground from your library that you will then insert over the background video.
In the preview window, the video will appear on top without you having to do anything further.
Step2. On the timeline, you now have to choose the foreground video clip and then at the top of the preview window select the Video Overlay Settings button.
There is a Cutaway option located just under the Video Overlay Settings button, which you will need to change to Picture in Picture.
When the video is played from the start, the foreground clip should be playing inside the background video.

Step3. Do you need to adjust the size and position? Just go back hit the Video Overlay Settings button.
You will then see there are handles on the edges of the foreground video. Click on these edges to adjust the size of the video. The position of the video can be adjusted by dragging it like in the preview window below.
Step4. Do you want to animate the video in the foreground? Begin by dragging the playhead and position it in your desired location, then a keyframe will be added to the timeline. See below:
Head back to the Video Overlay Settings and you will see a small controller (Add Key frame button) under the button:
At the location of the playheads, a keyframe will be inserted once you hit the Add Key frame button.
Similarly, drag the playhead a bit more on the timeline and then insert another keyframe by following the steps above again.
We can alter the location of the foreground video clip in the second keyframe on the preview window and adjust the size.
When we add two keyframes in this manner, the picture in picture positions can be moved from position A to B and the size also changes with the move.
3. Creating PIP with iMovie on iPhone/iPad
If you don’t know, you are not able to insert images into your video using iMovie iOS. The only option is to add video in video.
Therefore, in this section you will learn how to insert an image into a video with iMovie on iPad or iPhone. You will also learn how to add video to video by the end of this tutorial.
Step1. Begin by turning your image into a video. Launch iMovie and hit the Plus icon to set up a New Movie Project. Next, from your files, import an image.
Be sure to turn off Ken Burns by hitting the Ken Burns Enabled button. Once you do this, iMovie will instantly move the image when you insert it into the background video.
On the edge of the timeline, drag the image to make it as long as you require it for the video.
Next, hit done and Save Video on the bottom middle icon.
Step2. On the iMovie panel, hit the Plus icon once more to begin a New Movie Project. Import the video for the background to be edited when finished.
After that, press the Plus icon over the editing timeline to import the image that was converted into a video:
Hit the three dots. Next click on the square in a square (the fourth icon):
Do you want to relocate the image on the screen? Simply hit the video clip and on the top right corner, select the icon located over the magnifying button. Now you will be able to adjust the image.
To save the final result, just hit anywhere outside of the screen.
